Description

What is Entocort EC used for?

Entocort EC (generic name: budesonide) is an oral prescription indicated to treat mild to moderately active Crohn’s disease, which involves the ileum and/or the ascending colon among patients eight years old and above. It is also prescribed as a maintenance for the clinical remission of Crohn’s disease for up to 3 months among adults.

This oral medication is classified as a corticosteroid.

This is available in Entocort EC 3 mg controlled-release capsules.

How does Entocort EC work?

This oral anti-inflammatory corticosteroid is known to have a high effect on glucocorticoids and a weak effect on mineralocorticoids. Among its short-term effects are decreased vasodilation, the permeability of capillaries, and leukocyte migration to sites of inflammation. High doses of this medication can be immunosuppressive.

How to take Entocort EC

You must first read the patient information leaflet to take this oral medication. Take this medication exactly as directed. This is usually given once daily, in the morning. Swallow the capsule entirely and drink a full glass of water (8 oz./240 mL). Do not increase/decrease your Entocort EC dose.

Side Effects of Entocort EC

The common side effects of this oral corticosteroid are nausea, headache, heartburn, indigestion, stuffy nose, thinning of the skin, and changes in menstrual period. Further, some severe side effects that you have to report are unusual tiredness, slow wound healing, easy bruising and bleeding, white patches in the mouth, vision problems, infection, and mental or mood changes. Consult a healthcare professional if you experience severe or persistent adverse reactions.

Entocort EC Contraindications

This prescription medication should not be used if you have a known allergy to budesonide or any inactive ingredients the capsule contains. Signs of serious allergic reactions are breathing difficulty, swollen lymph nodes, severe dizziness, swelling of the face, skin rashes, and hives. If this occurs, you should seek medical attention immediately.

This medication is also contraindicated among people with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, eye problems, liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid problems, stomach or intestinal problems, osteoporosis, bleeding problems, current or past infections, and mental or mood conditions.

Due to drug interactions, you should also discuss with your physician all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Entocort EC Precautions

This corticosteroid can mask signs of infection. It can make you more likely to get infected and experience severe symptoms of infection. You may avoid this by not coming in contact with people who have an infection and always practicing good personal hygiene.

You should avoid any alcoholic and carbonated beverages while on this medication to lessen the risk of stomach or intestinal bleeding. You should also avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juices that could increase the risk of side effects.

Do not receive an immunization or vaccination while on Entocort. Vaccinations that contain live-attenuated bacteria may affect the efficacy of this drug.

Pregnant moms should avoid taking this corticosteroid as babies born to mothers taking Entocort end up with hormone problems. This medication can also pass into breast milk and should be taken by breastfeeding moms only if extremely necessary.

This oral drug is safe for children eight years of age and above who weigh not less than 55 pounds.

How much does Entocort EC cost?

Pharma Passport offers both brand and generic Entocort EC. You may see the price of this drug on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Entocort vs Prednisone?

Prednisone, a corticosteroid, suppresses the immune system and inflammation, whereas Budesonide, made from glucocorticoids, is used to treat Crohn’s disease. Entocort EC is known to have lesser adverse effects compared to Prednisone.

Does Entocort EC cause weight gain?

Although not common, it is likely that among Entocort side effects is weight gain.

Can I split Entocort EC capsules in half?

You should swallow the capsule whole. Splitting or chewing the capsule can release the drug all at once and increase the adverse effects.
