Indications

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions related to excess stomach acid. This medication may also be used to promote the healing of damage in the esophagus caused by stomach acid.

Omeprazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and helps reduce the amount of stomach acid your body produces. The medication does this by blocking an enzyme that controls acid production.

Prilosec reduces stomach acid to help treat and prevent frequent heartburn and symptoms of conditions caused by excess stomach acid.

FAQ

Can I take omeprazole in the morning and famotidine at night?

You can take famotidine at night without decreasing the effectiveness of a morning dose of omeprazole. Some research suggests taking these medications together can provide better control of acid secretion during the night, but more information is needed.

What foods should I avoid when taking omeprazole?

You don’t need to avoid specific food or drinks to prevent side effects or other issues when taking omeprazole. To help prevent and relieve symptoms related to excess acid, indigestion, heartburn, or stomach ulcers, you may want to avoid some foods that cause aggravation. These can include acidic, fatty, or greasy foods, white wine, and beer.
