Pentasa uses

Pentasa is used to treat a certain bowel disease called ulcerative colitis and helps reduce the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, which are characterized as rectal bleeding, diarrhea, or stomach pain.

This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates. This works by reducing the swelling in your colon. Pentasa Crohn’s disease is not an effective way of remission for active Crohn’s disease.

How to take Pentasa

Pentasa is typically taken orally as instructed by your doctor. Usually, you will be taking this medication four times a day every day with meals.

Do not chew, crush or break this drug. If you crush, break or chew the medication, it might not be adequately released into your colon. Swallow it whole immediately without chewing.

Dosages

The usual dosage for ulcerative colitis is 500 mg extended-release tablet taken by mouth four times a day. The duration of therapy will be up to eight weeks. Keep in mind that this is only the usual dose, you will have to speak with your doctor before taking this medication as the dosage will depend on your response to treatment and medical condition. If you want to get the best benefit out of this medication, take it regularly at the same time every day.

Pentasa Side Effects

While on this medication, you may experience headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, or nausea. If you experience any of these or if these worsen, inform your doctor right away. This medication may rarely worsen ulcerative colitis. If your symptoms become any worse, report to your doctor immediately, such as cramping, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.

Serious Side Effects

If you have any of these serious side effects, immediately inform your doctor, such as: signs of kidney issues, changes in your amount of urine, dark urine, blood in urine, vomiting, persistent nausea, yellowing of skin and eyes, extreme abdominal and stomach pain or shortness of breath.

Allergic Reaction

Seek medical attention right away if you observe any of the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swollen lymph nodes, fever or swelling, itching, rash on the tongue, face, throat as well as difficulties maintaining normal breathing and serious dizziness.

Caution

If you are allergic to Pentasa or any aminosalicylates, such as olsalazine, balsalazide, or salicylates such as salsalate and aspirin, or sulfasalazine. Inform your doctor that Pentasa contains inactive ingredients that cause allergic reactions.

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor of any medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, or stomach blockage such as pyloric stenosis.

Pentasa may cause you to be more sensitive to sunlight, especially if you suffer from skin problems characterized as eczema or atopic dermatitis. Avoid tanning booths and limit the time you spend under direct sunlight. Or use sunscreens and protective clothing when going outdoors. Consult your doctor immediately if you get blisters, sunburn, or redness.

Pentasa is very similar to aspirin. Teenagers or children below 18 years old should not be using aspirin or aspirin-related drugs such as: salicylates if they suffer from flu or chickenpox or any undiagnosed sickness, or have been vaccinated recently. In these cases, using aspirin will only increase your chances of Reye’s syndrome, a very rare and serious illness.

During your pregnancy, Pentasa is not recommended for use unless necessary. This medication passes through breastmilk, which can cause undesirable effects on the nursing baby. Speak with your doctor about the risks and benefits, and consult your doctor before deciding to breastfeed.
