Pentasa is used to treat a certain bowel disease called ulcerative colitis and helps reduce the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, which are characterized as rectal bleeding, diarrhea, or stomach pain.

If you are allergic to Pentasa or any aminosalicylates, such as olsalazine, balsalazide, or salicylates such as salsalate and aspirin, or sulfasalazine. Inform your doctor that Pentasa contains inactive ingredients that cause allergic reactions.

Teenagers or children below 18 years old should not be using aspirin or aspirin-related drugs such as: salicylates if they suffer from flu or chickenpox or any undiagnosed sickness, or have been vaccinated recently. In these cases, using aspirin will only increase your chances of Reye’s syndrome, a very rare and serious illness.  

During your pregnancy, Pentasa is not recommended for use unless necessary. This medication passes through breastmilk, which can cause undesirable effects on the nursing baby. Speak with your doctor about the risks and benefits, and consult your doctor before deciding to breastfeed.
