Tarceva Information

Tarceva (Generic name: Erlotinib Hydrochloride) is a cancer chemotherapy medication used for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), pancreatic cancer, and several other types of cancer. Tarceva is a targeted cancer treatment. Erlotinib is designed to block tumour cell growth by targeting a protein called EGFR (epidermal growth factor) to slow the growth and spread of cancer cells. Erlotinib is tyrosine kinase inhibitor that inhibits an enzyme within the cell that associated with EGFR. Take Tarceva exactly as it was prescribed for you.

Tarceva Side Effects

The most common Tarceva side effects are acne, cough, diarrhea, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as chest pain, cough, eye pain or irritation, fever, unusual bleeding from stomach or intestine, or symptoms of an allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.

Tarceva Precautions

Do NOT take Tarceva with food. It is important to take Tarceva tablets on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after eating. Do NOT take Tarceva oral if you are allergic to Erlotinib HCl or any of the ingredients in Tarceva medication. Avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice while taking Tarceva. Before taking Tarceva medicine, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as interstitial lung disease (ILD), liver or kidney disease, and etc. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. Because they may interact with Tarceva drug, especially of: anticonvulsants, antifungals, aspirin, barbiturates, calcium channel blockers, digoxin, live vaccines, pioglitazone, rifampicin, St.John’s wort, and warfarin.
