Product Details

Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) is an eyedrop medication used to dilate the pupil for an eye exam or other diagnostic procedures. It works by causing the muscles in the eye to relax, which dilates the pupil, so it does not narrow when the doctor shines light into the eye.

Common side effects may include blurred vision, mild stinging in the eyes, sensitivity to light, dry mouth, and headache. The serious side effects may include:

• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Hives
o Difficulty breathing
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Unusual changes in mood or behavior
• Fast, slow, or uneven heart rate
• Shortness of breath
• Light-headedness or feeling like you might pass out

You should not use Mydriacyl ophthalmic if you are allergic to Tropicamide. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. It isn’t known whether or not Mydriacyl will have an effect on an unborn or nursing baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing so you can discuss the risks. Do not give this medication to children without a doctor’s advice.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. It is typically going to be used at an eye doctor’s office during an eye exam. However, the following are if you are prescribed this medication for use at home. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes or hands. Shake your Mydriacyl eye drops before use and be sure to wash your hands both before and after use. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Look up and away, while squeezing a drop into the pocket. Be sure not to touch any part of the eye. Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes with your head tipped down. Do not blink or open your eyes. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for one minute to keep the medication from draining into your tear duct. Wait 5 minutes between drops, if prescribed more than one drop per eye. Do not use if the eye drops have particles or change colors and do not use if you are wearing contact lenses. Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the lid tightly closed and do not freeze.

There may be an interaction between Mydriacyl and other medications. These include any glaucoma medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Mydriacyl. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:
• Glaucoma
• Any drug allergies

Questions and Answers

1. How long will my eyes be sensitive after using Mydriacyl?
This eye drop medication can cause blurred vision and make your eyes very sensitive to light, since your pupils will not dilate. Be careful when driving or doing anything requiring you to see clearly for at least 24 hours. Use sunglasses when outside or driving, if you must do these things afterwards.

2. Can I use Mydriacyl if I wear contact lenses?
No, you do not want to be wearing contact lenses while using Mydriacyl. Not only can the preservative cause discoloration, wearing them while use can cause the medication to not work properly. It’s best to avoid contact lenses until your eyes are no longer dilated.

3. What should I avoid while taking Mydriacyl?
You will want to avoid driving, wearing contact lenses, and using any other eye medication until your eyes are no longer dilated.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
