Dosage

Usage

Reyataz (Atazanavir) is a prescription medicine used to control Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. The active ingredient in Reyataz is Atazanavir. Atazanavir belongs to a class of drugs called Protease Inhibitors. It works by stopping the protein that the virus needs for multiplication. This, in turn, reduces the viral load to an undetectable level. Reyataz can only control HIV. It is not a cure for the infection. Your doctor may prescribe Reyataz with other antiviral medicines to control your infection.

Warnings and Interactions

Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Reyataz or have other problems when using Atazanavir. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Reyataz comes as a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, break, or open it. Take the medicine with food. Drink extra fluids to keep your kidneys working properly while using this medicine. Reyataz is not a cure for HIV infection. You can still pass on the virus while taking the medication. Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse or sharing sharp objects like razors. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, do not drive or use machines. Do not stop taking this drug without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Reyataz, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Bleeding disorders;
• Diabetes;
• Heart problems;
• Intolerance to some sugars;
• Kidney problems;
• Moderate to severe liver problems

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Your dose may be different during pregnancy. To prevent pregnancy while using Reyataz, use a barrier form of birth control. The drug can make hormonal contraceptives less effective. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Atazanavir passes into breast milk, and it may harm your nursing infant. Women with HIV should not breastfeed a baby. The virus may be passed to your baby through breast milk even if the baby is born without HIV. Reyataz should not be given to a child younger than three months old and weighing less than 11 pounds (5 kilograms). There may be a drug interaction between Reyataz and other drugs such as lovastatin, triazolam, sildenafil, cisapride, and ergotamine.
