Imuran (Generic name: Azathioprine. Also called Azasan) is a prescription medication used to prevent rejection of kidney transplants. Imuran also is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in patients who do not response to rest, aspirin, or other non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant agent. It works by suppressing the immune system to reduce the inflammation and pain in rheumatoid arthritis. Take Imuran exactly as prescribed.
The most common Imuran side effects are diarrhea, hair loss, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach upset, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any serious side effects such as cough, fever, muscle or joint pain, unusual weakness, vision problems, and symptoms of an allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; itching; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Do NOT take Imuran oral if you are allergic to Azathioprine or any of the ingredients in Imuran medication.
