Aricept FAQs

Is Aricept available as a generic?

Aricept is available both as a brand-name drug and a generic. Aricept’s generic name is Donepezil, which you can purchase through physical and online pharmacies.

What is Aricept’s mechanism of action?

Aricept works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is the chief neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system. If this neurotransmitter is blocked, the muscles will not receive them and will not be able to function normally. Without this chemical, muscles will not be able to contract.

When comparing Namenda and Aricept, which one is better?

Aricept belongs to a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors, while Namenda belongs to a class of drugs called NMDA receptor antagonists.

Namenda will only slow the progression of symptoms in moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, but Aricept can treat dementia caused by all stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
