Indications

Desyrel is the brand name for trazodone, an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and difficulties with sleep.

Trazodone may be used off-label in the treatment of insomnia and may be effective in the treatment of sexual dysfunction.

Trazodone works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural chemical (serotonin) in the brain.

Use and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth after a meal or snack as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. If drowsiness is a problem and you are taking 1 dose daily, take it at bedtime. If you are taking 2 doses each day, it may help to take 1 of the doses at bedtime. Follow your doctor’s directions carefully.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low dose and gradually increase your dose.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and the risk of serious side effects may be increased.

Keep taking this medication as prescribed even if you feel well. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Anxiety, agitation, and trouble sleeping can occur if the drug is suddenly stopped.

It may take 2 to 4 weeks before you notice the full effects of this medication. Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Cautions

You should not use Desyrel if you are allergic to it. Do not use Desyrel if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days.

A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, and others.

After you stop taking Desyrel, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAOI.

Tell your doctor if you also take stimulant medicine, opioid medicine, herbal products, or medicine for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, serious infections, or prevention of nausea and vomiting. An interaction with Desyrel could cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Heart disease, or a recent heart attack
  • A bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Long QT syndrome
  • Drug addiction or suicidal thoughts
  • Bipolar disorder (manic depression)

Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.

Taking Desyrel during pregnancy could harm the baby, but stopping the medicine may not be safe for you. Do not start or stop Desyrel without asking your doctor.

If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry to track the effects of trazodone on the baby. Ask a doctor if it is safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Desyrel is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
