Salagen is used to treat symptoms of dry mouth due to a certain immune system disease called Sjogren’s syndrome, or due to radiation treatments of the head/neck for cancer. Salagen belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinergic agonists. It works by stimulating nerves to increase the amount of saliva you produce.

We currently offer the brand the brand Salagen from the United Kingdom by Merus Labs and from Canada by Methapharm. The generic Pilocarpine comes from Canada by a different manufacturer.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Salagen may include blurred vision, chills or flushing, diarrhea, headache, increased sweating, nausea, runny nose, urinating more than usual, watery eyes, and weakness.

Stop using Salagen and contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• A light-headed feeling, like you might faint;
• Confusion or tremors;
• Fast or slow heart rate;
• Pounding in your neck or ears;
• Severe headache;
• Shortness of breath

Do not use Salagen if you are allergic to Pilocarpine or if you have:
• Narrow-angle glaucoma;
• Untreated or uncontrolled asthma

Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you use a bronchodilator or if you take heart of blood pressure medications or if have ever had:
• Breathing problems;
• Gallbladder problems;
• Glaucoma, other vision problems;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney disease or Kidney stones;
• Liver disease;
• Mental illness or mental or mood disorders;
• Stomach problems

Salagen may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Salagen can make you more prone to dehydration; avoid becoming overheated during exercise and in hot weather. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Salagen and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
