What is Combigan?

Combigan, with the generic name brimonidine tartrate and timolol maleate, is an ophthalmic solution used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure or IOP among patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This medication is usually an adjunct to other eye medications when one medication cannot control the IOP. This could also help prevent complications like blindness.

These eye drops are a combination of alpha-adrenergic receptor agonists and beta-adrenergic receptor inhibitors. This medication has a rapid onset of action and could reach its optimum ocular hypotensive effects within two hours after it has been administered. This is available 2mg/5mg per mL. Combigan bottle sizes are 5mL and 10mL.

How to use Combigan

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this medication. Do not use this ophthalmic solution unless you have fully understood the instructions and information in the guide. If you need further medical advice or details on what is Combigan used for, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve full benefits. Carefully follow the instructions and Combigan eye drops dosage recommended by your doctor. If you are prescribed other eye medications, make sure that there is a 15-minute interval. Note that eye drops should be administered before eye ointments to allow proper drug absorption.

Contact lenses may absorb some Combigan ingredients. If you have a pair of contact lenses on, remove them before using this medication. You may put it back 15 minutes after using this medication.

Step by step guide:

  1. To prevent infection and contamination, wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
  1. In a comfortable position, slightly tilt your head backward. Pull your lower eyelid, and then look up.
  1. Place the tip of the dropper right above your eye and press the bottle to dispense a drop. Make sure that the tip of the dropper will not touch your eye.
  1. Gradually, look down and close your eye. Keep it closed for at least two minutes. Also, press the inner corners of the eye to prevent the solution from draining. Do not squint or blink.
