Multaq Information
Multaq (Generic name: dronedarone) was approved in July of 2009 for the treatment of patients who experienced an abnormal heart rhythm like atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter but currently have a more regular heart rhythm or will return to a more regular rhythm with medical treatment. Dronedarone is a derivative of the effective antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone, but does not contain the idodine atoms that make amiodarone toxic. Multaq comes in 400mg tablets designed to be taken twice daily (morning and evening) with meals. It can be used safely by people who have high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.
Multaq Side Effects:
The most common Multaq side effects are diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, skin infections, slow heart rate and weakness and lack of energy.
Multaq Precautions:
Taking Multag can be life threatening for people with severe heart failure. Do not take Multaq if you have severe heart failure or if you have been in the hospital recently for heart failure, even if your symptoms have improved. Call your doctor immediately if you experience weight gain, leg swelling, and increasing shortness of breath while resting. You should not take Multaq if you have severe liver problems.
Tell your doctor about all other medications and herbal supplements you are taking. Certain antibiotics, tricyclic antidepressants, Phenothiazines, and medicines used to treat abnormal heart rhythm or fast heartbeat can lead to a dangerous abnormal heart rhythm if taken with Multaq. Multaq can have negative interactions with common medications and herbal supplements such as Nefazodone,Voriconazole, Ritonavir, Telithromycin, Ketoconazole, Clarithromycin, Itraconazole, and Cyclosporine. Diuretic medications can lower the level of potassium or magnesium in your blood, which need to remain in the normal range when on this medication. You should not take Multaq if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant as its effects on the baby or fetus are unknown.
