Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) is a prescription medication that is used alone or combined with other medications to treat epilepsy. Oxcarbazepine belongs to the class of medications called anticonvulsants. This medication works by decreasing nerve impulses in the brain that causes seizures and pain. Trileptal is used alone as a single medication in adults and children who are over four years old. Trileptal is usually taken twice daily with or without food or as directed by your doctor.

The generic Oxcarbazepine comes from India also called Oxcarb by Cipla and Canada by a different manufacturer. Trileptal is available in the strength of 150 mg, 300 mg and 600 mg tablets.

The common side effects of Trileptal may include constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea or vomiting, stomach or abdominal pain, tiredness and trouble sleeping.

Inform your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects such as:

• Easy bleeding or bruising;
• Loss of coordination;
• Rapid or uncontrollable eye movements;
• Tremor;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Vision changes

You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Trileptal can be used during pregnancy when it is clearly needed. It may harm an unborn baby but do not stop taking this medication unless directed by your body. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Use reliable forms of birth control with your doctor because hormone birth control may not work if you are taking this medication. Oxcarbazepine passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
