Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Nexium (Esomeprazole) can also treat other excessive stomach acid illnesses such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Nexium (Esomeprazole) is also used to heal the esophagus when it is damaged by stomach acid. In some cases, Nexium (Esomeprazole) can be used to prevent gastric ulcers caused by infection with either nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or helicobacter pylori.

Nexium (Esomeprazole) should be stored away from moisture and heat at room temperature.

When taking Nexium (Esomeprazole), if you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as possible. Only skip the dose if it is close to your next dose time. If you overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Overdose symptoms can include headache, confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness, fast heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, flushing, sweating, shortness of breath, tremors, loss of coordination, or convulsions.

While taking Nexium (Esomeprazole), follow your doctor’s instructions about drink or food restrictions.

Take Nexium (Esomeprazole) only a prescribed by your doctor or on the prescription. Do not take Nexium (Esomeprazole) in larger doses or for a longer duration than recommended. Nexium (Esomeprazole) is usually prescribed for 4 to 8 weeks only, however, your doctor may recommend a second course if you require more healing.

Take Nexium (Esomeprazole) with a full glass of plain water and do not crush or break the capsule; swallow it whole. Nexium (Esomeprazole) is designed for slow release so breaking the pill will negatively affect the healing process. To make Nexium (Esomeprazole) swallowing easier, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into pudding or applesauce-like foods, but remember to swallow the mixture right away without chewing.

Avoid taking Nexium (Esomeprazole) if you are allergic to benzimidazole medication such as Albenza, or Vermox or if you are allergic to esomeprazole. Be sure to inform your doctor if you have had liver or heart disease before taking Nexium (Esomeprazole). Do not take Nexium (Esomeprazole) if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breast feed a baby while taking Nexium (Esomeprazole).

Severe: Seek medical attention if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
