Indications

Minocin is a medication that contains minocycline hydrochloride as its active ingredient.

Minocin is a type of antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline family and is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections.

Minocin may help reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of the medication. It may be used as an off-label treatment for mild rheumatoid arthritis.

Use and Dosage

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking minocycline and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is best taken on an empty stomach. Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually every 12 hours, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take this medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 millilitres) unless your doctor directs you otherwise. If stomach upset occurs, taking it with food or milk may help. However, minocycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk, so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can take it that way. If you are taking the capsules, swallow them whole. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. For this reason, do not take it right before bedtime.

Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc. Some examples include antacids, didanosine solution, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice. These products bind with minocycline, preventing your body from fully absorbing the drug.

The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time every day.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to minocycline (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, a red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).

Seek medical treatment if you have a serious drug reaction that can affect many parts of your body. Symptoms may include skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. This may be more likely with long-term use of minocycline, and the reaction may occur several weeks after you begin using this medicine.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, or feeling tired or short of breath (signs of kidney problems)
  • Loss of appetite, upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, easy bruising or bleeding, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (signs of liver or pancreas problems)
  • Joint pain or swelling with fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, chest pain, vomiting, unusual thoughts or behavior, and patchy skin color
  • Severe headaches, ringing in your ears, dizziness, vision problems, or pain behind your eyes

Common minocycline side effects may include:
