Product Details

Viibryd is an antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a partial serotonin receptor agonist. Viibryd is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

This medication has a boxed warning for increased thoughts of suicide for children and young adults (ages 24 and younger) at the beginning of treatment with an antidepressant. Any changes in mood or signs of worsening of depressive symptoms should be closely monitored and reported immediately to your healthcare provider.

The common side effects of Viibryd include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and sleep problems. The serious side effects may include:
• Blurred or tunnel vision
• Easy bruising, bleeding that doesn’t stop
• Racing thoughts, extreme feelings of happiness or sadness, decreased inhibitions, unusual risk-taking behaviors
• Eye pain or swelling, halos around lights
• High levels of serotonin
• Low sodium levels
• Seizures

You should not take Viibryd if you are allergic to Vilazodone, or if you have recently used an MAO inhibitor such as methylene blue injection or in the last 14 days. A dangerous interaction can occur. After you stop taking Viibryd, you must wait at least 14 days before starting an MAOI, as well.

Some younger people may have suicidal thoughts when they first take an antidepressant. Be sure to update your doctor if this happens.

This medication can cause a serious lung problem and other complications to an unborn baby. It is unknown how it might affect a nursing infant. Do not start or stop this medication during pregnancy without a doctor’s advice. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while on this medication.

This medication is not approved to be used in children.

Precautions

Be sure to take Viibryd exactly as your doctor prescribes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication. This medication works best when taken with food.

Do not start or stop this medication suddenly, or you may have unwanted withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about how to safely stop using the medication.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Bipolar disorder
• Bleeding or blood clot disorder
• History of drug abuse or if you drink alcohol
• Liver or kidney disease
• Narrow-angle glaucoma
