Usage

Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) is a prescription medication used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus infection. Truvada is also used to prevent HIV infection. Truvada is a combination of Emtricitabine and Tenofovir. Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, while Tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Truvada works by blocking the enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which HIV uses to copy its genetic material and reproduce. This medication suppresses HIV in people who are already infected and it also prevents the virus from infecting other people.

Truvada is not a cure for HIV infection and it will not always prevent HIV infection. To help prevent HIV infection and to decrease the risk of spreading HIV to others, continue to take all HIV medication as prescribed by your doctor and always use an effective barrier method during sexual intercourse. Do not share personal items such as needles or syringes, toothbrushes and razors or anything that may have been in contact with blood or other body fluids with anyone.
