Indications

Ketostix are reagent strips used for urinalysis to test for the presence and concentration of acetoacetic acid (ketones) in the urine. This substance is produced when the body is using stored fat for fuel, such as during a low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet.

Ketostix is commonly used by people on these types of diets to track their level of ketosis, but they were originally designed to help diabetics avoid a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis occurs when there is both high blood sugar and high serum ketones and can be life-threatening.

Use and Dosage

Pyrazinamide dosage and regimen for TB treatment are available. Pyrazinamide should not be used alone for treatment and must be given with other antituberculosis agents.

The dosing regimen depends on the patient’s weight and the severity of the illness. It should be administered once daily or as directly observed therapy. Please consult a healthcare provider for the appropriate use and dosage of Ketostix (pyrazinamide) or any other medication.

  • Adult: As part of a multi-drug regimen: For standard unsupervised 2-month treatment: 50 kg: 1.5 g daily; 50 kg: 2 g daily. For intermittent supervised 2-month treatment: 50 kg: 2 g 3 times weekly; 50 kg: 2.5 g 3 times weekly.
  • Child: As part of a multi-drug regimen: For standard unsupervised 2-month treatment: 35 mg/kg daily. For intermittent supervised 2-month treatment: 50 mg/kg 3 times weekly.

Side Effects

Pyrazinamide may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, joint and muscle pain.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, or swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience any other side effects.

Cautions

Use of Fixed Combinations

When the fixed-combination preparation containing isoniazid, rifampin, and pyrazinamide (Rifater) is used, observe the usual precautions and contraindications associated with all drugs in the preparation. Use the fixed-combination preparation only when all 3 drugs are indicated.

Precautions Related to the Treatment of Tuberculosis

Should not be used alone for the treatment of TB; must be given in conjunction with other antituberculosis agents.

Clinical specimens for microscopic examination and mycobacterial cultures and in vitro susceptibility testing should be obtained before initiation of antituberculosis therapy and periodically during treatment to monitor therapeutic response. The antituberculosis regimen should be modified as needed. Patients with positive cultures after 4 months of treatment should be considered to have failed treatment (usually as the result of noncompliance or drug-resistant TB).

Compliance with the full course of antituberculosis therapy and all drugs included in the multiple-drug regimen is critical. Missed doses increase the risk of treatment failure and increase the risk that M. tuberculosis will develop resistance to the antituberculosis regimen.

To ensure compliance, ATS, CDC, IDSA, and AAP recommend that directly observed (supervised) therapy (DOT) be used for the treatment of active (clinical) TB whenever possible, especially when intermittent regimens are used, when the patient is immunocompromised or infected with HIV, or when drug-resistant M. tuberculosis is involved.
