Dosage

EpiPen is available as Epipen Junior (0.15 mg/1 syringe) and EpiPen Adult (0.3 mg/1 syringe).

Usage

EpiPen (Epinephrine Auto Injector) is a prescription medication that is used for emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions to insect bites, insect stings, food, medication, as well as other allergens such as latex. When you have a severe allergic reaction, your blood pressure can become dangerously low, with swelling of the face and throw. The other signs and symptoms can include hives, flushing, fast heart rate, paleness, weakness, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Epinephrine belongs to a family of medications called sympathomimetics. Epinephrine auto injector acts quickly to improve breathing, stimulate the heart, raise a dropping blood pressure, reverse hives, and reduce swelling of the face, lips, and throat.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of EpiPen may include anxiety, fear, dizziness, headache, paleness, restlessness, shaking, throbbing, and weakness. Stop using EpiPen and seek emergency medical help if you experience serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Increased heart rate;
• Irregular or skipped heart beats;
• Symptoms of a stroke

If you still have questions about the side effects, we always suggest further conversations with your doctor.

Warnings and Interactions

• A thyroid disorder;
• Diabetes;
• Heart disease such as abnormal heartbeats, chest pain, and high blood pressure

Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all your allergies, if any. EpiPen contains sulfite. You don’t need to worry about the sulfa allergy in those situations since epinephrine can save your life.

Therefore, ahead of using, you should learn how to prepare and use this drug product properly. By doing so, you are more prepared during an emergency.

This medication acts quickly to provide relief during a severe allergic reaction. However, it does not last long. After getting the first dose, you should seek urgent medical care immediately, and don’t forget to let the healthcare providers know that you already had one dose of EpiPen. You may need another dose if the symptoms are not improved. This information is also applied to your child or anybody whom you are taking care of.

You may not need EpiPen often; therefore, you should check on the expiration date and appearance of the drug solution – The solution should be clear; do not use it if the solution is brown or pinkish. When receive a new EpiPen, you should check to make sure that you have no problems removing the pen from its case. Keep your EpiPen close to you at all times. If this is for your child, an extra EpiPen should be stored at school.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Epinephrine and other medications such diuretics, beta-blockers, alpha adrenergic blockers (tamsulosin, prazosin), MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, digoxin, ergot medication, heart rhythm medication, levothyroxine, and certain antihistamines.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. However, in cases of an anaphylactic allergic reaction, pregnant women and nursing (breastfeeding) mothers should use EpiPen just like usual – this medication is the first-line choice for the treatment of anaphylaxis in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
