How Fenofibrate Works
Fenofibrate is a medication primarily used to treat individuals with abnormal cholesterol levels; it is also the active medicinal ingredient found in Tricor. Fenofibrate works by lowering LDL cholesterol which is known as “bad cholesterol” and triglycerides which are known to cause health problems if not under control. It also increases good cholesterols or HDL which is essential to good health. Fenofibrate can be taken alone or with “statins” as directed by your doctor.

Generic Fenofibrate vs Brand Tricor
The brand tricor and the generic, both contain the medical ingredient Fenofibrate. Fenofibrate is marketed by Abbott as Tricor and Trilipix in the USA only; Tricor is known as Lipidil in Canada and in the rest of the world. Your order of Tricor may have an alternate name depending on its country of origin; an alternate name does not make the medication a generic. Generic Tricor or Fenofibrate is manufactured outside of an Abbott facility; this is the biggest difference between Tricor and Fenofibrate. Generic Fenofibrate and Tricor are identical in dose, strength, safety, efficacy, chemical makeup and therapeutic use. We currently have the brand from Canada, UK and Germany and the generic from Canada, India and UK.

Fenofibrate Guidelines

Individuals with liver function problems need to be closely monitored by a doctor as Fenofibrate may affect the liver. Those with Kidney problems may need to take lower doses depending on the severity of kidney function; patients who are undergoing dialysis should not take Fenofibrate. Women who are still in childbearing years are to use strict birth control methods, if pregnancy occurs, stop taking this medication immediately and contact your doctor. Fenofibrate should not be taken by women who are breast-feeding.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
