WHAT IS ONGLYZA USED FOR?

Onglyza (Saxagliptin) is used in conjunction with diet and proper exercise, in order to control blood sugar in people that have type 2 diabetes. Controlling blood sugar levels will help the kidney in preventing kidney damage, nerve problems, blindness, the loss of limbs, or problems with sexual functions, as well as lessen the risk of heart attacks or stroke. This is done by increasing the substances in the body called incretins. Incretins control blood sugar by increasing insulin release.

HOW TO TAKE ONGLYZA

Onglyza is usually taken with or without food as instructed by your doctor, typically once a day. The manufacturer of this drug has recommended not to cut or split tablets before taking them. However, many similar drugs (immediate-release tablets) can be cut or split. Always follow what your doctor tells you on how you should be taking this medication.

DOSAGES

Onglyza dosage will depend on your current medical condition and responses to treatment, as well as other medications you might be taking. The recommended dose is Onglyza 2.5mg or Onglyza 5mg tab once every day, which can be taken with or without meals.

ONGLYZA SIDE EFFECTS

Be sure to inform your healthcare professional or pharmacist of any serious side effects you might experience using Onglyza. There are unusual side effects, such as skin blisters, joint pain, and signs of heart failure (these can be shortness of breath, ankles/feet swelling, sudden or unusual weight gain, and unusual tiredness).  Onglyza does not cause low blood sugar, but it can occur if taken with other diabetes medication. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about other diabetes medications you are taking.

Symptoms of low blood sugar are characterized as shaking, sudden sweating, hunger, fast heartbeat, blurred vision or dizziness, and tingling hands/feet. To prevent this, carry glucose tablets in case of emergencies. In the event that you do not have glucose tablets, consume sugary beverages or food to increase blood sugar levels rapidly. Low blood sugar can be caused by large amounts of alcohol, unusually heavy exercise, or not consuming enough calories.

Symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) include increased urination, thirst, drowsiness, confusion, flushing, rapid breathing, or fruity mouth odor. If any of these symptoms are experienced, contact your doctor immediately. You may need to take a higher dose of this medication.

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS

Seek medical attention immediately if these serious symptoms are felt. Signs of disease in the pancreas can be characterized as severe stomach or abdominal pain, which can spread to the back, nausea, and vomiting that doesn’t stop.

ALLERGIC REACTION

Severe allergic reactions to Onglyza are rare, but they may occur. Having said this, seek medical attention immediately if any of these are experienced: itching, rash/swelling (of the tongue/face/throat), extreme dizziness, trouble breathing.

CAUTION

Before taking Onglyza, make sure to inform your doctor of any existing medical conditions and allergies. This medication contains inactive ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or other problems, so speak to your doctor beforehand.

If you have any medical history of kidney disease or disease in the pancreas (pancreatitis), please inform your doctor. Risk factors for pancreatitis are stones in the gallbladder, regular or abuse of alcohol, high levels of fat (triglycerides in the bloodstream), and heart failure.

You might experience dizziness, blurred vision, or drowsiness because of very low sugar levels in the blood. Do not use machinery or drive until you are positive that you can accomplish these tasks safely. Any activity requiring alertness or clear vision is also not allowed until it can be done safely.

It is harder to control your blood sugar when your stress levels are high. This can be caused by fever, infection, injury, or surgery. Speak to your doctor because this can require a change in your treatment plan, blood sugar testing, or medication. Before surgery, inform your doctor or pharmacist of other drugs you might be taking with Onglyza. This can include prescription and non-prescription drugs as well as herbal medicine.

Pregnancy can cause diabetes to worsen. Speak to your doctor to formulate a plan for managing your blood sugar while pregnant. Your doctor might change your diabetes treatment during pregnancy, including diet, medications, and insulin. It is yet to be known if Onglyza passes on breast milk, so speak to your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQs

Comparison of Januvia vs Onglyza

Januvia is typically better for add-on treatment, given your blood sugar is not being controlled. It is not advisable to use injectables. Onglyza can cause heart failure more than medicine that works just like it.
