Usage

Heptral (Ademetionine) is a prescription medicine used to treat adult with major depressive disorder. It can be used to treat intrahepatic cholestasis, a condition in which bile flow from the liver is reduced and excess cholesterol in bile and biliary and liver diseases caused by cystic fibrosis. The active substance in Heptral is Ademetionine. Ademetionine belongs to the class of medication called Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It works by causing an increase in the level of certain neurotransmitters (serotonin) in the brain, which communicate between brain cells which regulate mood and treat depression. Treating depression prevents self-harm or suicide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Heptral are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and irritability.

Stop using Heptral and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Symptoms of allergies include skin rash, swelling of your face, tongue, and throat, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty;

• History of bipolar disorder;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including gallstones, cholecystitis, and biliary colic);
• Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies

Inform your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to get pregnant. Do not use Heptral during pregnancy.
