Description

Generic Name: ipratropium bromide and albuterol

Drug Class: anticholinergic and beta2-adrenergic agonist

Indications

Combivent Respimat is an inhalation spray prescribed to treat patients with COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This is given to patients on bronchodilator but continues to manifest bronchospasm.

Dosage Form

This is available in Combivent Respimat 20 mcg ipratropium bromide and 100 mcg albuterol, which delivers 120 metered actuations.

Combivent Respimat Mechanism of Action

This inhalation spray combines an anticholinergic and a beta-agonist. It works by impeding the vagally-mediated reflexes by inhibiting the actions of acetylcholine. This results in bronchodilation. Also, it increases the concentration of cyclic AMP, which results in the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the airway, from the trachea to the bronchioles.

Combivent Respimat – How to Use

Before you take this prescription product, you must read the patient information leaflet or brochure that comes with it. Do not use this oral inhaler unless you thoroughly understand all the information and instructions. Ask your doctor or the pharmacist for further information.

This is usually prescribed four times daily or not exceeding six inhalations in 24 hours. Make a dosing schedule so you will not miss your doses. Do not increase/decrease your Combivent Respimat doses or use this inhaler more frequently than prescribed.

Step-by-Step Guide on using Combivent Respimat

  1. First, ensure that the orange cap is still closed and push the safety catch right in the middle of the inhaler or device as you pull off the clear base. Be careful not to touch the piercing component inside the base.
  2. Write the exact discard date on the label of the device. The discard date should be three months from when the medication has been opened or inserted.
  3. Take the cartridge out of the packaging. Then, insert the narrow side of the cartridge into the inhaler. Never remove the cartridge once it has been inserted.
  4. Put the clear base and orange cap back into the inhaler.
  5. Hold the Combivent Respimat in an upright position and turn the clear base to the direction of the white arrow shown in the label. You will hear a click.
  6. Flick the orange cap until you see that it is fully opened. Ensure that the inhaler is away from your face and push the dose release button. Once the mist or spray is already visible, do it three more times to fully prime the inhaler.
  7. Exhale slowly but deeply. Put the inhaler inside the mouth and seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Remember that your hands or fingers must not cover the air vent.
  8. Inhale slowly & fully through your mouth as you press the dose release button.
  9. Hold your breath for 10 secs. or as long as comfortable. Then, exhale slowly once more.
  10. Once you are done, close the orange cap and breathe normally. Rinse your mouth with tap water and spit it out.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is Combivent Respimat used for?

This inhalation is mainly prescribed for COPD with bronchitis and emphysema. Physicians prescribe Combivent Respimat for asthma, which is considered severe.

2. Is Combivent Respimat a rescue inhaler?

This inhalation can treat and prevent symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, but it cannot work as fast as a rescue inhaler. Thus, patients must have a separate quick-relief inhaler for asthma attacks.

3.Is Combivent Respimat better than albuterol?

A Combivent Respimat inhaler is used for COPD, especially if the patient is not responding well to bronchodilator monotherapy. On the other hand, albuterol is used for asthma attacks as it is known to act quickly.

4. Do you need a prescription for Combivent Respimat?

This prescription product for COPD requires a valid prescription. You will be required to provide a copy of a valid prescription if you want to purchase this drug from any pharmacy.

5. What can I substitute for Combivent Respimat?

This oral inhalation is a combination of ipratropium bromide and albuterol. Currently, there are no available products that can substitute for this inhaler.

6. How many puffs are in Combivent Respimat Inhaler?
