Description

What is Bystolic?

Bystolic (generic name: nebivolol) is an oral prescription indicated to manage hypertension by lowering blood pressure. Reduced blood pressure lessens the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, particularly stroke and myocardial infarction. It also reduces the risk of kidney problems due to hypertension.

This is available in Bystolic 10 mg, 20 mg, 2.5 mg, and Bystolic 5 mg tablets.

How does Bystolic work?

This antihypertensive agent’s mechanism of action is not fully established yet. However, this medication works by decreasing heart rate, reducing myocardial contractility, diminishing the tonic sympathetic outflow to the periphery from cerebral vasomotor centers, suppressing renin activity, and decreasing peripheral vascular resistance or vasodilation.

Bystolic Side Effects

The common side effects of this antihypertensive medication are nausea, headache, dizziness, tiredness or fatigue, trouble sleeping, slow heartbeat, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. On the other hand, some of the severe adverse effects that need to be reported are blue fingers or toes, very slow heartbeat, swelling of extremities, unusual weight gain, shortness of breath, chest pain, and mental or mood changes. Consult a doctor or any healthcare professional if any of the severe side effects occur.

Contraindications/Precautions

This prescription medication should not be used if you have a known allergy to nebivolol or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of serious allergic reactions are skin rashes, swelling of the face and neck, swollen lymph nodes, itchiness, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. Alert your medical emergency line and stop taking Bystolic if this happens.

This prescription medication is contraindicated for people with a history of heart rhythm problems, breathing problems like bronchospastic disease, blood circulation problems, liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, myasthenia gravis, hyperthyroidism, any mental or mood disorders.

Due to drug interactions, you should also discuss with your physician all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Dizziness and lightheadedness are among the common adverse effects of this drug that could be aggravated by alcohol. Limit your consumption of alcoholic drinks as much as possible. You should also observe caution when driving, operating machinery, or doing any tasks that require alertness.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I split Bystolic tablets in half?

You may cut or crush the tablets. Ask for assistance from your pharmacist.

2. Is Bystolic a beta-blocker?

This oral drug is classified as a beta-adrenergic blocking agent.

3. What must I do if I happen to forget my Bystolic dosage?

If you forget your dose, take it right away, except if it is about time for your next scheduled dose.

4. How long does it take for Bystolic to work?

It could take around four hours for this oral medication to start working. It could also take several weeks for a patient to achieve the full benefits of this drug.

5. Is Bystolic safe for pregnant and breastfeeding moms?

Pregnant moms must avoid this medication as babies born to mothers taking this drug end up having low birth weight, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, shallow breathing, and low blood sugar levels.

For breastfeeding moms, it is unknown if this drug could pass into breast milk. Discuss the possible risks and benefits with your physician.

6. How should I take Bystolic?

To take this oral medication, you must first read the patient information leaflet. Take this medication exactly as directed. This is usually prescribed once daily. It’s safe to take with or without food. Swallow the tablet and drink fluids right after. Do not increase/decrease your dosage, and do not take this medication more often than prescribed.
