Product Details

Lopid (Gemfibrozil) is a prescription medication which is used along with a proper diet to help lower fasts and raise good cholesterol in the blood. Gemgibrozil belongs to a group of medications known as fibrates. This medication works by blocking the production of certain types of cholesterol called triglycerides. By lowering triglycerides in people with very high levels may also decrease the risk of pancreas disease. Reduction of cholesterol levels has been shown to reduce the risks associated with heart disease. The recommended adult dose of Gemfibrozil is 600mg twice daily, thirty minutes before the morning and evening meals.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Lopid may include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, skin rash and stomach pain, gas, or heartburn. The serious side effects may include:
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Muscle pain;
• Numbness or tingling of arms or legs;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Unusual tiredness

You should not take Lopid if you are allergic to Gemfibrozil or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may increase the risk for gallstones. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding a baby. You should not take this medication if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while using this medication, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor. There may be an interaction between Gemfibrozil and other medications such as cholestyramine, colestipol, cyclosporine, repaglinide, statins and warfarin.
