What is Inderal LA used for?

Inderal LA (generic name: propranolol hydrochloride) is an oral medication indicated to treat angina pectoris (chest pain), high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, and circulatory conditions. This prescription drug is also used to prevent heart attacks and reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. However, this medication is not intended for the management of hypertensive emergencies.

This is available in Inderal LA 80 mg, 60 mg, 120 mg, and 160 mg long-acting capsules.

How does Inderal LA work?

This nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist. This works by decreasing cardiac output, inhibiting the release of renin by the kidneys, and curtailment of thoracolumbar outflow from vasomotor centers in the brain. It also lessens the oxygen requirement of the heart regardless of cardiac effort through blocking of the elevation in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and the extent and velocity of myocardial contraction as induced by catecholamine.

How to use Inderal LA

Read the medication guide or information leaflet that came with this product first. Do not take any prescription drug without fully understanding all drug information and contraindications written in the manual. If you have inquiries regarding the use of this drug or need additional medical advice, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the capsule orally. This is usually prescribed once daily or as directed by your doctor. You may take this oral medication with/without a meal. After swallowing the pill full, take a glass of water. Do not decide, chew, or crush the long-acting capsules. Doing so might release the active ingredients at once and increase the risk of side effects.

Remember to take this oral medication regularly and exactly as prescribed. To avoid skipping medications, make a dosage regimen. If you are prescribed any cholesterol-lowering agents, such as colestipol or cholestyramine, take propranolol at least one hour prior or four hours after taking these medications.

Do not change your Inderal LA dosage as it is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Note that this prescription drug is not intended for hypertensive emergencies or migraine attacks. Further, do not stop taking this medication abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.
