Clomid (Clomiphene) is a non-steroidal fertility medication used to stimulate ovulation. It is commonly used in women with certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, that prevent naturally occurring ovulation. This medication is not recommended for women whose ovaries no longer make eggs properly (primary pituitary or ovarian failure). It works by causing the pituitary gland to release the hormones needed to stimulate ovulation, or the release of an egg from the ovary. To make sure Clomid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, ovarian cysts unrelated to polycystic ovary syndrome, past or present liver disease, a pituitary tumor, thyroid or adrenal gland problems, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids. Tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking to reduce the risk of interactions. Do not start using Clomid if you are already pregnant. If you become pregnant during treatment, tell your doctor. Clomid may pass into breastmilk. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding to discuss any possible risks. Clomid can cause a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). OHSS can be a serious condition. Call your doctor if you have any symptoms of OHSS, including stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight gain, little or no urination, pain when you breathe, rapid heart rate, or feeling short of breath. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
