WHAT IS HYTRIN? 

Hytrin (Terazosin) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-blockers, which works by blocking an organic chemical in the body, called norepinephrine, from tightening the walls of arteries and veins.

HYTRIN PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking Hytrin medication, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions: 

  • Fainting 
  • Eye Problems 
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Painful or Prolonged Erection 

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience drowsiness, dizziness, or blurry vision. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects. 

Before undergoing surgery (especially glaucoma/cataract eye surgery), make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Hytrin. 

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Hytrin. 

Geriatric patients are more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, and low blood pressure. Get up slowly from sitting or lying to avoid experiencing these side effects. This also puts you at an increased risk of falling.  

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.  

It is unknown if this medication passes into breastmilk, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

HYTRIN SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Hytrin include drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, weakness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, runny or stuffy nose, and headache. Stop taking Hytrin, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing: 

  • Fainting 
  • Irregular Heartbeat 
  • Tingling Feeling 
  • Unexpected Weight Gain
  • Sexual Function Problems
  • Painful or Prolonged Erection
  • Inflammation in the Ankles, Hands, or Feet

HYTRIN DOSE 

Act in accordance with your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Hytrin comes in the following which is capsules and comes in four (4) dosage strengths, which are 1 mg, 2 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg. 

For benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) treatment, the recommended starting dose is 1 mg, taken orally every night at bedtime. You may increase the dosage to 5 mg, taken orally every night at bedtime, up to 20 mg, which can benefit some. 

For high blood pressure (hypertension) treatment, the recommended starting dose is 1 mg, taken orally every night at bedtime. You may increase this medication to 1 – 5 mg once daily or every 12 hours. The maximum recommended dosage is less than or equal to 20 mg per day.   

In case you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication capsule as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of Hytrin medication to make up for the missed dosage.  

In case you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing, which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
