Usage

Fludara (Fludarabine Phosphate) is a prescription medication used to treat B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) that got worse during or after treatment with standard therapy. Fludara is also an effective therapy for treating low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), hairy cell leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia and a type of lymphoma that affects the skin called mycosis fungoides. The active ingredient in Fludara is Fludarabine phosphate. Fludarabine phosphate belongs to the group of medicine called antineoplastics, and antimetabolites. It inhibits DNA polymerase alpha and works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells and stops it from multiplying.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Fludara are nausea, vomiting, hair loss, injection site pain, taste changes and numbness.

Stop using Fludara and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Coughing out blood;
• Confusion and agitation;
• Darkening of your nails;
• Hearing problem;
• Passage of bloody urine;
• Recurrent infection;

Fludara Directions

The usual starting dose of FLUDARA tablets is 40 mg/m2 of fludarabine phosphate administered once daily for five consecutive days every 28 days. Fludara tablets can be taken either on an empty stomach or with food. The tablets must be swallowed whole with water; they should not be chewed, broken or crushed.

Before using Fludarabine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies. Fludara is available in tablet form and as an injection vial. Swallow the tablet whole with enough water. Do not chew or break the tablet. The Fludara tablet can be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Fludara injection is given by a doctor into the vein for over 30 minutes usually once daily for five days. Your dosage is based on your medical condition, body size, and response to treatment. Your doctor will check your blood counts to make sure you can receive your next cycle. Do not miss your clinic appointments. Avoid the vial from spilling on your skin. You should wash the area immediately with soap and water. If this medication gets in your eye, open the eyelid and flush with water, then get medical help directly. Your cancer treatment with Fludara may be for a long time (between 6 months to 2 years until there is little or no sign of abnormal leukaemia or lymphoma cells in your blood. Consult your doctor if you experience a severe side effect or your condition worsens.

Before you start using Fludara, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Previous history of radiation therapy;
• Skin cancer;
• Urinary tract infection

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant before starting cancer therapy such as Fludara. During pregnancy, do not use Fludara products. Fludarabine Phosphate may be harmful to the foetus. It is recommended for men and women of reproductive age not to conceive while taking Fludarabine. Discuss with your doctor for effective barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms. Discuss with your doctor when you may safely become pregnant or conceive a child after therapy. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breastfeeding while using Fludara injection or its tablet is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Fludara and other drugs such as live vaccines, pentostatin, aspirin and warfarin.
