Buspar is used to treat anxiety disorders and for relief of anxiety symptoms including fear, tension, irritability, dizziness, pounding heartbeat, etc. Buspar is an anti-anxiety medication that affects the chemicals in your brain that may be unbalanced and cause anxiety.

Store Buspar at room temperature away from moisture and heat.  Keep Buspar away from children and pets.

Precaution: Do not take this medication for longer than 4 weeks.  Before taking Buspar, tell your doctor if you have or have had liver disease or kidney disease.   This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, however, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

Buspar may cause side effects that can impair your thinking or reactions.  Be careful when you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.  Drinking alcohol may increase some of the side effects caused by Buspar.  Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Buspar.  Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with Buspar and cause potentially dangerous side effects.  Do not increase the amount of grapefruit products you consume without talking to your doctor.  Do not give this medication to anyone under the age of 18. Cold and allergy medications, narcotic pain medication, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, and medicine for seizures or depression may add to the drowsiness caused by Buspar.   Tell your doctor about any medication (prescription and non-prescription) that you use before taking Buspar.

Patient Family Information: Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed to you.  Do not take Buspar in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed to you by your doctor.  Buspar is usually taken for a short time.  Do not take Buspar for longer than 4 weeks without your doctor’s recommendation.  Buspar can be taken with or without food, but make sure you take Buspar the same way each time.  Tablet forms of Buspar might need to be broken before being taken.  These tablets have scored marks on the pills so that you can easily break the tablet.  Do not use a Buspar tablet that has not been broken properly.  If you have switched from another anxiety medication to Buspar, you might need to gradually decrease your dose of the other medication instead of stopping it suddenly.  Some anxiety medications can cause withdrawal symptoms.  Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Contraindication: Do not use Buspar if you are allergic to buspirone, or if you have used an MAO inhibitor like isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 2 weeks.  Life-threatening side effects can occur if you take Buspar before an MAO inhibitor has cleared your body. Do not take Buspar if you are breastfeeding a baby.  It is not known whether Buspar passes into breast milk.  Talk to your doctor about breastfeeding before taking this medication.

Sever Side Effects: Seek emergency medical attention if you have any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction to Buspar: difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects: feeling light-headed, fainting, fast or uneven heart rate, depressed mood, unusual thoughts or behavior, or lack of balance and coordination.  Less serious side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, restlessness, nausea, upset stomach, sleep problems (insomnia), or trouble concentrating.
