What is Florinef? 

Florinef (Fludrocortisone) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of conditions where the body is not producing enough steroids, such as Addison’s disease and adrenogenital syndrome. 

It belongs to a class of drug called mineralocorticoids, which works by reducing sodium levels in the urine.

Avoid being exposed to chickenpox or measles infection while taking this medication, unless you already had these infections before. If you have been exposed to either infection and you haven’t had it before, seek medical attention immediately. 

Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications may make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking this medication and have taken this in the past in case of surgery, emergency treatment, serious illness, or injury. Keep a warning card or medical ID bracelet with you that identifies that you are using this medication, at all times, especially when outdoors. 

Limit alcoholic beverages while taking this medication if you have a history of ulcers or are taking large doses of aspirin or other arthritis medications to lower the risk of developing stomach or intestinal bleeding.  

This medication puts a child at an increased risk of slowing down its height. Monitor your child’s height and growth regularly and consult your doctor.  

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant.

Florinef Dose

  • For the treatment of adrenocortical insufficiency or Addison’s disease, the recommended usual dosage is 0.1 mg per day, taken orally. The recommended range dosage is 0.1 mg, taken orally 3 times a week to 0.2 mg per day, taken orally. 
  • If high blood pressure (hypertension) occurs, the recommended dosage is 0.5 mg, taken orally once daily.
  • For the treatment of congenital adrenogenital syndrome, the recommended dosage is 0.1 to 0.2 mg, taken orally once daily. 

This medication must be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and excessive heat.
