Pentasa Extended Release Information:
Pentasa (Mesalamine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It can be taken orally or as a suppository or enema. For the treatment of these conditions, Pentasa targets the prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the enzymes, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. These enzymes are over-active in individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases. Pentasa works by blocking the activity of the enzymes, reducing the production of prostaglandins, which in turn decreases inflammation in the colon and the symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding and stomach pain. To make sure Pentasa is safe for you, tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, as well as if you have ever had heart, kidney, or liver disease, or a blockage in your digestive tract. It is unknown if Pentasa will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding, as Pentasa can pass into breast milk. If you notice symptoms of liver or kidney problems, stop using Pentasa and call your doctor immediately. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
