Indications

Lamictal is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat symptoms of epilepsy and mood episodes from bipolar disorder.

Lamotrigine is a phenyltriazine antiepileptic drug that inhibits sodium channels and blocks the release of certain neurotransmitters that may contribute to seizures and symptoms of mood disorders. Thanks to this, Lamictal helps delay the onset of mood episodes such as depression, mania, or hypomania related to bipolar disorder.

This medication is used to help prevent different types of seizures, including partial-onset, primary generalized tonic-clonic, and generalized seizures. Lamictal has also been found to be as effective as lithium for the maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder.

Seek medical attention right away if you notice a rash or any hives, blistering or peeling skin, or sores in your mouth and around your eyes.

To ensure the safety of taking Lamictal, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant to determine a treatment plan. Taking lamotrigine while pregnant could increase the risk of your baby being born with a cleft lip or cleft palate.

Birth control pills can interfere with lamotrigine and cause it to be less effective, meaning seizures could increase. Consult with your doctor about birth control options and if you start or stop using birth control pills.

Some medications can interact with lamotrigine and cause unwanted side effects or decrease effectiveness. Tell your doctor about all medications you take, especially the following:

  • Antiepileptic medications
  • Antibiotics

FAQ

Is it better to take Lamictal at night?

Lamictal can be taken anytime without its efficacy being diminished. If lamotrigine makes you sleepy, then you should take it at night. If it keeps you awake or doesn’t affect your alertness, then you can take it in the morning.

How does Lamictal work?

For the treatment of epilepsy, lamotrigine slows electrical signals in the brain to help prevent seizures. Experts aren’t entirely sure how the medication prevents mood episodes for bipolar disorder, but it may be like epilepsy.

How long does Lamictal stay in your system?

Lamictal takes roughly 14 days to completely clear your system. The medication has a half-life between 11.6 and 61.6 hours, meaning lamotrigine decreases by half within this time frame, and then another half in the same length of time.
