Table of contents:

Emadine is a medication used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eyes caused by pollen in patients with hayfever). Emadine contains the active ingredient emedastine difumarate. Emedastine difumarate is an antihistamine.

Emadine works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms such as itching, redness, and swelling. Histamine is released by the immune system in response to an allergen, such as pollen, pet dander, or dust. By blocking histamine, emedastine can relieve eye allergy symptoms such as itching, redness, and watering.

Use and Dosage

Emadine is usually applied to the affected eye(s) twice a day, or as directed by your doctor. To avoid contamination, firstly wash your hands before applying Emadine eye drops. Remove contact lenses before using Emadine eye drops because it contains a preservative that can be absorbed by them. Wait at least 10 minutes after using this medication before putting the lenses back in. Do not wear your contact lenses if your eyes are red.

To apply Emadine eye drops:

  1. Tilt your head back, look upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch.
  2. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the eye. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Try not to blink and do not rub your eye.
  3. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining out.
  4. Repeat these steps for your other eye if so directed.
  5. After use, do not rinse the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use.

If you are using another kind of eye medication (such as drops or ointments), wait at least 5 minutes before applying other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye.
