What does Nasonex do?

Nasonex Nasal Spray (Mometasone) is a prescription medication that helps to treat and prevent symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, itching, and runny or stuffy nose. This nasal spray also helps in the treatment of noncancerous growths on the nasal passages or sinuses (nasal polyps). It belongs to a class of drugs called intranasal corticosteroids, which works by inhibiting cytokine production to reduce inflammation.

Nasonex Precautions

Before using Nasonex, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:

  • Active or Chronic Infections
  • Recent Nose Problems
  • Sores or Ulcers Inside the Nose
  • Nasal Surgery or Injury to the Nose
  • Eye Problems (Glaucoma, Cataracts)

Nasonex Nasal Spray puts you at an increased risk of acquiring infections. Avoid contact with patients suffering from contagious infections, such as chickenpox, common cold, E. coli, measles, and flu. Call your doctor for a consultation if you have been exposed.

Although rare, long-time usage of corticosteroid medications may lead to difficulty for your body in responding to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery, dental procedure, or emergency treatment, or if you acquire a serious illness or injury, inform your healthcare provider that you are taking this medication or have taken this medication recently.

Before undergoing surgery, inform your healthcare provider about all products or medications you are using, such as prescription/nonprescription medications and herbal products.

Although unlikely, long-time usage of this medication may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. Call your doctor for a consultation and regularly monitor your child’s height.

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.

It is unknown if Nasonex nasal spray will affect or harm a nursing woman or a nursing baby. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Nasonex Side Effects

The common side effects of Nasonex include headache, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, cough, flu-like symptoms, nose or throat dryness, blood-tinged mucus or phlegm, and nosebleeds. Stop taking Nasonex nasal spray, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

  • Pain or Sores in the Nose
  • White Patches in the Nose or Mouth
  • Painful or Trouble Swallowing
  • Severe Bleeding from the Nose
  • Wheezing
  • Weight Changes
  • Slow Wound Healing

  • Vision Problems
  • Ear Pain or Full Feeling
  • Trouble Hearing

  • Allergic Reaction (Hives, Rash, Swelling)

Although rare, nasal corticosteroids, such as Nasonex, may be absorbed into the bloodstream. Such occurrences can lead to side effects due to too much corticosteroid. The side effects are most likely to affect children or patients using this medication for a long time and in high doses. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience side effects, such as unusual fatigue, weight changes, headache, inflammation in the ankles or feet, increased thirst, increased urination, and vision problems.

This is not the complete list of the adverse effects of Nasonex nasal spray. Call your doctor for medical advice about the side effects you may experience from this medication.

Nasonex Dosage

Act in accordance with your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Read the medication guide and prescription labels for the drug information and directions in taking this medication. Ask for help from a doctor or pharmacist if you don’t understand the instructions for using this medication.

Nasonex comes in one dosage form, a nasal spray suspension, and one dosage strength, which is 50mcg per spray.

Shake Nasonex 50 mcg nasal spray before each use. Before your first use, prime the pump by spraying the medication into the air. If the nasal spray has not been used for longer than a week, prime it again by doing the same method.

To use this spray, keep your head up and put the tip of the bottle inside one of your nostrils. Press the other nostril with one finger and breathe in quickly while you gently spray the medication. You may use the medicine on your other nostril afterward.

Avoid blowing your nose for a few minutes after usage. Don’t spray less or more than the number prescribed by your doctor. If the medication gets in your eyes, mouth, or skin, rinse immediately with water.

To treat allergic rhinitis or seasonal allergic rhinitis, administer two sprays (100 mcg) into each nostril once a day.

For prophylaxis, administer two sprays (100 mcg) into each nostril once a day, 2 to 4 weeks before pollen season.

To treat nasal polyps, administer two sprays (100 mcg) into each nostril every 12 hours.

Nasonex nasal spray must be stored upright at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Ensure to throw away the medication after 120 sprays, even if there is still medicine left.
