What Is Dexilant Used For

Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is prescribed to help heal erosive esophagitis EE; it can also help manage symptoms of EE when it is already healed, such as heartburn. It can also be prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD.

Dexilant belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors PPIs. It works by attaching to the proteins causing the increase of stomach acid; this action results in cessation of the protein work. This medicine reduces the acid in the stomach and prevents the acid from flowing back up to the esophagus resulting in less acid reflux.

Dexilant Dosage

Doses and length of treatment for each patient differ due to several factors such as medical condition, age, and response to the treatment. Dexilant 60 mg and 30 mg are delayed-release capsules taken once a day without regard to food; they should be swallowed whole to avoid destroying the drug’s action. If having trouble swallowing whole medicines, the capsule can be opened and sprinkled in 1 tablespoon of apple sauce, and it must be swallowed immediately without chewing. It is recommended to take Dexilant at a regular time daily to help attain benefits; once a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but if it is nearing the next intake schedule, skip the missed dose and proceed to take on a regular schedule. Do not take two doses to catch up for the missed dose.

The average dose of this medication is listed here; follow your prescription if it is different from here:

  • 60 mg once a day for up to 8 weeks is prescribed for treating EE
  • 30 mg once a day for up to 6 months is prescribed for prevention of recurrence of EE and heartburn relief
  • 30 mg once a day for up to 4 weeks is prescribed for treating GERD

Inform your doctor ahead about your medical history, specifically a liver disease or lupus. Do not forget to inform them if you are taking other medications to avoid drug interactions.

Dexilant Side Effects

Take note that the side effects of Dexilant listed here are not the complete list.

Get medical help right away if a severe allergic reaction occurs with a rash, hives, trouble breathing, itchiness, and severe dizziness.

Most patients taking Dexilant do not have serious side effects, but the following listed below may still occur; inform your doctor immediately if any of it is experienced:

  • Indication of low magnesium levels (irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasm, or seizures)
  • Sign of lupus (rash on your cheeks or arms that gets worse when exposed to sun and new or worsening joint pain)
  • Symptoms of severe intestinal condition (persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, or blood in stool)
  • Sign of kidney problems (blood in urine or urination that is less than usual)

This medication’s most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, headaches, mouth sores, and cold symptoms; if they persist or worsen, inform your doctor and ask for medical advice.

Dexilant vs Nexium

Both medicines belong to the class of proton pump inhibitors and work the same way but contain different active ingredients. They are both prescribed to treat erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and frequent heartburn, but Nexium is also indicated to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and ulcers. Dexilant is a prescription drug containing dexlansoprazole, available in capsule form and is meant to be used by ages 12 and above. In contrast, Nexium has esomeprazole and is an over-the-counter drug available in capsule, oral suspension, or injection and can be used by ages one and above. Both medicines show similar effectiveness on clinical trials, but Dexilant has been more effective in treating non-erosive reflux disease than Nexium; however, Dexilant is more expensive than Nexium.
