Indications
Lithmax is an anti-manic medicine used to treat manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder).
Lithium carbonate helps stabilize your moods and prevent manic episodes by affecting the sodium channels in your brain, the exchange of ions, and nerve conduction. The drug may also decrease levels of norepinephrine in your brain. These help Lithmax decrease the frequency and severity of manic episodes when taken daily.
Dosage and Administration
The dose of Lithmax that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and severity of the bipolar disorder being treated. Follow all directions given by your healthcare provider and read packaging instructions carefully to ensure the best results. Do not take more than prescribed more often than recommended and do not suddenly stop treatment.
- Swallow tablet whole, do not crush or chew
- Drink plenty of fluids during treatment to avoid dehydration
- Tablets are usually taken twice daily roughly every 12 hours
- Patients switching from immediate-release capsules to Lithmax should be given the same daily dose or as close to that as possible
- Most patients take doses ranging around 900mg daily
- When the division of a daily dose is unequal, give the larger dose in the evening
- To treat acute mania, most patients achieve satisfactory respones that are maintained with 1800mg divided daily
- For long-term maintenance therapy, most patients take doses ranging from 900 to 1200mg divided daily
- Doses should be individualized according to serum lithium levels and therapeutic response
- Store at room temperature away from children and pets

FAQ
Should I take lithium at night or in the morning?
Lithmax should be taken twice daily roughly 12 hours apart with food. If your daily dose cannot be divided into an even amount, then it is usually recommended that you take the larger portion at night. Follow all instructions given by your healthcare provider to ensure the best therapeutic results.
Do you have to drink lots of water on lithium?
During treatment with Lithmax, it is important that you stay hydrated because becoming dehydrated will affect your serum lithium levels which can cause adverse effects. Consult with your healthcare provider for advice on how to avoid dehydration, but generally drink plenty of fluids and be cautious in hot weather and when participating in activities that cause you to sweat a lot.
