What are The Uses of Vivelle DOT 

Vivelle DOT (estradiol) transdermal system is a prescription drug indicated to treat moderate to severe vulvar and vaginal atrophy and vasomotor symptoms among menopausal women. It is also used to manage hypoestrogenism secondary to castration, hypogonadism, or primary ovarian failure. Furthermore, it prevents osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. 

This is available in Vivelle DOT 0.025 mg/day, 0.0375 mg/day, 0.05 mg/day, 0.075 mg/day, and 0.1 mg/day transdermal system.

Mild/Common Side Effects: 

-Redness and irritation on the application site 

-Nausea and vomiting 

-Headache 

-Bloating 

-Weight changes 

-Breast tenderness 

Severe Side Effects: 

-New or increased vaginal bleeding

Vivelle DOT Warnings 

Do not use this transdermal system if you have a known allergy to estradiol or any inactive ingredients/materials it contains. Signs of serious allergic reactions are trouble breathing, skin rashes, itching/hives, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, and swollen lymph nodes. This must be considered a medical emergency. Immediately seek emergency help if this occurs. 

This patch may be contraindicated for people with a history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cancer of the uterus, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, asthma, porphyria, seizure, any mental or mood disorders. Because of possible drug interactions, you must also talk about all the supplements, prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products you are taking. 

Do not smoke or keep away from using tobacco while on this patch. These products contain substances that may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and hypertension, especially for women above 35. 

Before undergoing an MRI test, make sure to inform the doctor or radiologist that you are using a transdermal patch. This patch could contain a mental that may cause burns during the procedure. You may be asked to remove your patch before the MRI and have a new one applied after. 

Estradiol may cause dark and blotchy patches on the face and skin. This is why it is important to limit your exposure to the sun while using this medication. You must also apply sunblock cream or lotion and wear protective clothing when going out. 

Mechanism of Action 

This estrogen derivative is hugely responsible for maintaining and developing the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. It also regulates the pituitary secretion of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and gonadotropins via a negative feedback mechanism. 

How to Use Vivelle DOT 

Before you use this transdermal patch, you must read the patient information leaflet that comes with it. Before using this product, make sure you thoroughly understand its uses and instructions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. 

Remember to use this patch exactly as prescribed. This is usually replaced every 3 to 4 days or twice a week. Never alter your Vivelle DOT dosage. Place it in the lower abdomen below the waistline to apply the patch. Avoid using a new patch to the same area for one week. Ensure that the site is clean and free from any product like powder, oil, or lotion. Open the Vivelle DOT patch and peel off its backing. Put the sticky side to the proper area. Do not touch the sticky side with your fingers as it contains active ingredients. Press the patch firmly for 10 seconds to ensure that it will stay in place.
