Eliquis Uses

Eliquis (apixaban) is a direct-acting oral anticoagulant DOACs, also known as a blood thinner, preventing blood clots in different conditions. Apixaban works by attaching to the activated blood clotting factor called factor Xa. It contains the factor from working and decreases the blood clotting ability to help prevent harmful clots from forming in the blood vessels.

Eliquis is usually prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Atrial fibrillation AFib – an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots that can travel in the body, increasing the risk of stroke.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT – blood clots in a vein deep inside the body usually form in the legs and feet but can also arise in the arms.
  • Pulmonary embolism PE – a blood clot that blocks the lungs from the DVT that is dislodged.

Eliquis can also help prevent DVT and PE from recurring and prevent DVT from leading to PE in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgeries.

Eliquis Dosing

The dose prescribed for each patient varies depending on medical condition, age, weight, and response to the treatment. Eliquis is available in tablet form of 2.5 mg and 5 mg taken twice a day at a 12 hours interval without regard to food; read the medication guide before taking it.

It is best to take Eliquis on a regular time daily to help attain benefits; a missed dose can still be taken once remembered, but if it is nearing the following intake schedule, skip the missed dose and do not take two doses to catch up for the missed one.

Prescriptions listed here are the average dosing; follow your prescription if it is different from here:

  • For DVT and PE, the initial dose is 10 mg twice a day for seven days and will be reduced to 5 mg twice a day for several months.
  • For prevention of DVT and PE recurring, 2.5 mg twice a day as prescribed.
  • For prevention of DVT after a hip or knee replacement, the dose should be taken 12 or 24 hours after the surgery. 2.5 mg twice a day for 35 days is prescribed for hip replacement, while 2.5 mg twice a day for 12 days is prescribed for knee replacement.

Side Effects of Eliquis

Get medical help right away if you experience a severe allergic reaction with a rash, itchiness, swelling, trouble breathing, or a sign of severe bleeding such as vision change, confusion, difficulty speaking, and weakness on one side of the body.

Most patients taking Eliquis do not have serious side effects. However, report the side effects of serious bleeding, such as unusual pain, unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts or gums, persistent nose bleeds, unusual and prolonged menstruation, dark urine, coughing up blood, or difficulty swallowing, for this can happen when the blood clotting proteins are affected too much.

Common side effects include nausea and easily bruised or minor bleeding; call your doctor for medical advice about the side effects that persist or worsen. Lists here are not the full side effects of Eliquis.

Inform your doctor beforehand of all other medicines you are taking to avoid drug interactions. Aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs may increase the risk of bleeding; your doctor may adjust your medication if you are taking them to prevent heart attack and stroke.

You can lower the chance of bleeding by taking precautions in your daily living, such as carefully using sharp tools and avoiding sports or activities that may harm you. You should also inform your dentist that you are taking Eliquis before having a dental procedure. However, if a life-threatening or uncontrolled bleeding occurs, Eliquis reversal is recommended using an antidote called Andexxa.

Pregnant women taking Eliquis and having an epidural in labor have a higher risk of blood clots in the spinal cord. It is better to discuss risks and benefits before using them.

Xarelto vs Eliquis

Both medicines are blood thinners used to prevent blood clotting in conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, recurring DVT and PE, and DVT from leading to PE. However, Xarelto can also prevent blood clots in patients with acute medical illnesses and those with coronary artery disease. Xarelto is a brand-name medication containing rivaroxaban; it is taken once or twice a day and is quite expensive. In contrast, Eliquis has apixaban and is taken twice a day. It is also considered a costly medication, but there is a generic for Eliquis, which is more affordable.

Both medications are found effective in preventing blood clots for AFib. Still, Eliquis has been found to be more effective in preventing DVT and PE from recurring. Studies also show that Eliquis has a lower risk of bleeding than Xarelto.
