Usage

Protopic Ointment (Tacrolimus) is a prescription medication used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children 2 years or older. Protopic is a topical macrolide immunosuppressant. It belongs to a class of drugs known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs). This medication works by decreasing the growth of atopic dermatitis (eczema) on the skin. Protopic ointment is not to be used in people with weakened immune system.

Side Effects

The common Protopic Ointment side effects may include:
• Acne;
• Headache;
• Upset stomach;
• Runny or stuffy nose;
• fever, sore throat, cough;
• Burning, itching, soreness and stinging in the area to be treated skin ((more prominent during the first few days of therapy).

• An allergic reaction (itching, rash, swelling, difficult breathing) - seek medical care at the nearest emergency room; ;
• Signs and symptoms of a viral skin infection such as skin sores, blisters, scabs, cold sores around the mouth;

• Appearance of any skin symptoms such as warts, unusual rash or skin lesions;
• Back or joint and muscle pain;
• Severe stinging, pain, burning or itching

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Protopic Ointment if you are allergic to Tacrolimus or to any ingredients in this medication. Before using Protopic, tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:
• A weak immune system;
• Any generic skin disorder (such as Netherton's syndrome);
• Bacterial or viral infection such as herpes or chickenpox;
• Kidney disease;
• Skin cancer

Protopic Ointment may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds or sunlamps. Wear sunscreen (not on the treated skin) and loose protective clothing when you are outdoors. This medication may make you more sensitive to the effects of alcohol. You should limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take including prescriptions, OTC and herbal medications. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. There may be a drug interaction between Protopic Ointment and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Protopic ointment should not be used for children less than 2 years old. Only Protopic ointment 0.01% can be used on children aged 2 to 15 years.
