Indications

Exforge is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

Exforge is a combination of two substances, amlodipine and valsartan, that work together to help control blood pressure in adults who have hypertension that is not adequately controlled on either amlodipine or valsartan taken alone.

Use and Dosage

Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking this product and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. It may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of this product. Keep taking this product even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.

Tell your doctor if you do not get better or if you get worse (your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Edema (swelling) in the extremities
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • URTIs
  • Dizziness

These effects tend to be mild. Talk to your doctor if any side effects manifest severely if they do not go away, and if they worsen.

Along with these effects, there is also a risk of a rare condition or side effects developing. Inform your doctor right away if you have the following:

Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, fainting, dehydration, blurry vision, and lack of alertness. You may be at a higher risk of developing low blood pressure if you take diuretics or water pills, are on a low-salt diet, have previous heart issues, are receiving dialysis treatment, drink alcohol regularly, or have a chronic condition that causes mineral and fluid loss from diarrhea or vomiting.

Heart Problems

If you have a history of heart problems including heart failure or heart disease, this medication may cause chest pain or angina. Immediately contact your doctor if this occurs. Watch for signs of chest pain when starting your treatment with Exforge or when increasing your dosage if you have ever had severe heart problems.

Kidney Problems

Talk to your doctor if you encounter extreme fatigue, trouble sleeping, dry skin, urinary frequency, bloody urine, swelling in the ankles, loss of appetite, and/or muscle cramps. The risk of kidney problems is higher for those who have previously suffered or currently suffer from kidney disease.

This list does not include all possible negative effects of this medicine.

This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you dizzier. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).

Too much sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause you to feel lightheaded. Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
