Indications

Wellbutrin is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).

Bupropion is a second-generation antidepressant from the phenyl aminoketone class. The drug inhibits norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake by blocking nicotinic receptors to improve the chemical balance in your brain. These mechanisms allow Wellbutrin to improve symptoms of depression.

This antidepressant is quickly absorbed and metabolized by the body. Wellbutrin helps balance norepinephrine and dopamine to improve symptoms related to major depressive disorder.

If you take Wellbutrin to treat depression, do not also take Zyban to help your quit smoking because these medications could interact and cause adverse effects.

Do not use Wellbutrin within 14 days of using an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, and others. A dangerous drug interaction could occur if used too closely together.

Bupropion may cause seizures, especially in those with certain medical conditions who are predisposed or those taking certain medications. Tell your doctor about all your conditions and the drugs that you take to ensure Wellbutrin is a good fit.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Head injury, seizures
  • Brain or spinal cord tumor
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attack
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Depression, bipolar disorder, or other mental illnesses

Some young people may develop suicidal thoughts when first taking any antidepressant, including Wellbutrin. Monitor your symptoms and keep in regular contact with your doctor.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, especially mood or behaviour changes such as anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, feeling impulsive, irritable, agitated, aggressive, hyperactive, more depressed, or if you have suicidal thoughts.

Consult with your doctor before using Wellbutrin if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant and before breastfeeding while using the medication. Bupropion’s effect on unborn babies is unclear but having a relapse of depression from stopping treatment could cause harm as well. Do not stop taking Wellbutrin without a doctor’s advice.

FAQ

Does Wellbutrin cause weight gain or weight loss?

Wellbutrin can cause either weight gain or loss, although a decrease in weight is more common. A common side effect of bupropion is loss of appetite which can cause changes in your weight. Dramatic fluctuations in weight are not common; speak with your doctor for more information if you have any concerns.

How long does Wellbutrin take to work?

You should see an improvement in symptoms such as sleep, energy, and appetite within the first two weeks of taking Wellbutrin, but improvements in your mood may take longer. Bupropion needs time to absorb into your body and start inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. You should see results within 6 to 8 weeks of treatment.
