Axid is part of a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. It works by lowering the amount of stomach acid you produce. Axid is used to treat stomach ulcers. It also treats heartburn and erosive esophagitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Store Axid at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Discard any unused Axid liquid that is older than 30 days.

Avoid taking Axid while taking Tagamet, Zantac, or Pepcid unless your doctor has told you to do so. Sometimes heartburn can be confused with symptoms of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or a heavy feeling in your chest, dizziness, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, sweating, nausea, or vomiting, and a general feeling of illness. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant during treatment. Some medications can harm an unborn baby. Axid can pass through breast milk and may be dangerous to a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. Do not give Axid to a child under 12 without consent from a doctor. Tell your doctor about all medications that you use before you take Axid.

Axid may impair your reactions. Be cautious when you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and fully alert. Using this medication may be only a part of a full treatment program. Follow your doctor’s instructions closely. This medication can cause you to have unusual results in certain lab tests. Tell any doctor that treats you that you are using Axid. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Axid. Alcohol can increase the risk of damage to your stomach.

Use Axid exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not use Axid in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed to you. Measure liquid Axid with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist. Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks of Axid treatment. It can, however, take up to 8 – 12 weeks for you to heal with Axid. For best results, keep using the medicine as it was prescribed to you. Consult your doctor if you symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks. If you miss a dose of Axid, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Do not use Axid if you are allergic to nizatidine or similar medications like Zantac, Tagamet, or Pepcid. Do not take Axid without telling your doctor if you have had kidney or liver disease, or stomach cancer.

Seek emergency medical attention if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects to Axid: Pal

Less serious side effects include: mild rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; runny or stuffy nose, cough; increased sweating; or impotence or trouble having an orgasm.
