Papaverine HCL Injection (Papaverine Hydrochloride) is a medication used to treat many conditions that cause spasms in the smooth muscles of the body, including chest pain, circulation problems, heart attack, or disorders of the stomach or gallbladder. It is also used in the treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia, a condition where the intestines do not receive enough blood flow. Papaverine HCL Injection belongs to a class of medications called antispasmodics, and works to treat muscle spasms by relaxing the small muscles within the walls of blood vessels. It is thought to do this through its actions on calcium channels, and through its inhibition of phosphodiesterases. Papaverine is not for use in treating erectile dysfunction and should not be injected into the penis. This practice has resulted in painful or prolonged erection that may require surgery to correct.
