What is Symbicort Used For?

Symbicort Inhaler is used for asthma and asthma-related symptoms for adults and children over the age of 12.

Is Symbicort a Rescue Inhaler?

The way in which this inhaler is used depends on the strength of the medication. Symbicort 100/6mcg inhalers are taken daily as part of maintenance therapy, while Symbicort 200/6mcg is used both as maintenance therapy and as a rescue inhaler.

Can This Medication be used for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?

Some strengths of this medication can be used to maintain and relieve symptoms of COPD including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Symbicort 160-4.5 mcg inhaler and Symbicort 200/6 mcg inhalers are both sometimes prescribed to treat COPD. Talk to your doctor about using Symbicort to treat your condition if you are not adequately treated yet.

How Does It Work?

Symbicort is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients:

Budesonide is known as an inhaled corticosteroid, meaning that it’s a drug that has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation of the airways in the lungs can occur from stress on the tissue and cause asthma symptoms to arise. These symptoms can cause more stress, further inflaming the tissue. Reducing inflammation is a way to ease the symptoms of asthma.

Formoterol is what’s called a Long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA). LABAs are drugs that have bronchodilator properties, or in other words, they can relax the muscles in the bronchial tubes, allowing for increased airflow. This can help with shortness of breath by widening the airways and allowing for more oxygen to be taken into the lungs.

Who Should Not Use this medication?

Do not use Symbicort inhaler if you have a known hypersensitivity to the active or non-active ingredients used to make Symbicort. If you have a hypersensitivity to any other LABA or corticosteroid, or any other medication, you should talk to your doctor before you use Symbicort.

Warnings & Precautions

Some formulations of Symbicort are not intended to be used as a rescue inhaler. Always check with your doctor first before using your inhaler if you are unsure of its intended or proper use. Keep your rescue inhaler with you at all times without exception.

The Symbicort inhaler is a corticosteroid. These types of drugs can cause severe withdrawal symptoms if they are suddenly discontinued. If you, for any reason, wish to stop using Symbicort, you MUST speak with your doctor about how to gradually decrease your dosage until it’s safe for you to come off of it.

Side Effects

While you are unlikely to experience side effects that require medical intervention, you should monitor your health closely and call your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of these uncommon side effects:

  • Difficulty breathing (worsened)

Symbicort Inhaler: How to use

Dosage:

Your dosage may vary from the recommended dosage depending on a variety of factors including the severity of your condition or whether it’s being used as a short or long-acting inhaler.

Directions:

To begin using your new inhaler, it must be primed before the first time you take a puff.

To prime:

  • Unscrew the protective cover
  • Hold the inhaler upright by the canister or grip
  • Turn the red grip as far as it will go in one direction, then turn it back the other way until lit stops turning. You should have heard a click at some point while turning the grip.
  • Repeat step 3 once more — once you have, your inhaler is primed for use

To use:

  • Unscrew the protective cover
  • Hold the inhaler upright by the canister or grip
  • Load the dose by repeating step 3 from the “To prime” instructions above
  • Do not drop, shake, or breathe into the mouthpiece at this point, otherwise you will need to re-load your dose
  • Exhale deeply away from the mouthpiece to prepare yourself
  • Bring the mouthpiece gently to your lips
  • Inhale fully
  • Exhale away from the mouthpiece
  • Repeat steps 2-8 if you have been prescribed 2 or more doses by your doctor
  • Always screw the protective cover back onto the inhaler directly after use
  • Rinse out your mouth with water only and spit it out. Do not swallow

Pay attention to the dose indicator on the canister so you can prepare for when your inhaler runs out of doses. You must always make sure you have a replacement when your inhaler is starting to get low.

Storage

Store at room temperature with the cover screwed on tightly.
