What is Azilect used for?

Azilect, with the generic name rasagiline mesylate, is an oral medication indicated to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It helps improve stiffness, shakiness, and difficulty moving. This medication can also lessen the periods of slow movement and stiffness or “off-time”.

This is available in Azilect 1 mg and 0.5 mg tablet forms.

Mechanism of Action

This monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor (MAOI) works by reducing the breakdown of dopamine which results in the increased level of this certain neurotransmitter in the brain. It is believed that the increased level of dopamine is likely to mediate the beneficial effects of this medication.

How to use Azilect

Read the medication information leaflet included with this product first. Do not take this prescription drug if you have not fully understood the drug information and precautions printed in the guide. If you have queries regarding the accurate use of this medication or need further medical advice, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily, with or without a meal or as directed by your physician. Swallow the tablet and drink a glass of water thereafter. If you need to split or crush the medication, consult your pharmacist first.

Remember to take this MAOI regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosage regimen to avoid missing a dose. Do not alter your Azilect dosing as it depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, or other medications you are taking. Note that taking this oral drug more frequently and in a higher dose will not improve your condition but would instead increase the risk of severe adverse effects. Also, do not stop taking this medication abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions while using Azilect

Before starting to use this prescription drug, you must disclose your complete medical history with your physician, especially any history of stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure or hypertension, migraine, liver disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, sleep disorder, or mental disorder. Some conditions may impact how you will respond to treatment. Moreover, you should talk about all the prescription drugs and nonprescription drugs you are taking because of possible Azilect drug interactions.

While on this therapy, keep an eye out for any allergic reactions. Do not take this oral MAOI if you have a known allergy to rasagiline or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, swelling of the face and neck, hives, and skin rashes. If this occurs, you must immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency medical attention.

Consuming foods that are high in tyramine could increase the risk of hypertensive crisis. To avoid such conditions, do not eat food that has high tyramine content, such as aged cheeses and cured meats.

Stop drinking any alcoholic beverages while on this treatment. Alcohol could interact with rasagiline and worsen adverse effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness, and falling asleep suddenly. You must also practice extreme safety precautions when doing activities that require alertness, like driving.

It is still unknown whether this prescription drug can pose harm to unborn babies and breastfed children. Moms who are pregnant or breastfeeding must use this drug only if clearly needed.
