Boniva is a prescription medication that is used in the treatment for osteoporosis in women after they experience menopause. Boniva helps the user by reversing bone loss in most women, even though they may not be able to see or feel a difference. Boniva works by binding with your bones and staying attached throughout the month.

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have any other medical condition.

When taking a Boniva tablet, your body needs to stay upright for at least one hour (60 minutes).

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Swallow Boniva whole (do not chew or suck) with at least 6 to 8 ounces (1 cup) of plain water. Do not take Boniva with mineral water, sparkling water, coffee, tea, milk, or juice. Avoid taking any other oral medicine, including calcium, antacids, or vitamins, for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva. Avoid lying down for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva to help decrease the risk of pro

Do not take this Boniva if you are allergic to Ibandronate or if you have low blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia). If you can not sit upright or stand for at least one hour, do not take Boniva because the medication can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus.

Most severe: Chest pain; difficulty or pain when swallowing; pain or burning under the ribs or in the back; new or worsening heartburn; severe joint, bone, or muscle pain; jaw pain, numbness, or swelling.

Most common: Back pain, headache; redness or swelling of your eyes; diarrhea; flu symptoms; redness or swelling where the medicine was injected; nausea or upset stomach; pain in your arms or legs.
