Indications

Zestoretic is an antihypertensive medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

This medication combines lisinopril, an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, with hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. The lisinopril is used to lower your blood pressure by inhibiting certain enzymes that affect your cardiovascular health while also relieving symptoms of fluid retention. Hydrochlorothiazide increases the amount of sodium your body excretes through your urine to reduce the amount you absorb. These actions help manage and control your blood pressure while helping protect your cardiovascular health.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Zestoretic that you are prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment. Do not change your dose on your own.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take with or without food at the same time each day
  • Take in the morning or at least 4 hours before bed if it causes you to urinate more frequently
  • If you take cholesterol-lowering drugs, use Zestoretic at least 4 hours before or after
  • Most adults take 10/12.5mg or 20//12.5mg once daily
  • If you were previously using lisinopril monotherapy, your dose of lisinopril may be reduced when adding the diuretic
  • If you were previously being treated with a diuretic, you may need to stop taking it for 2 to 3 days before starting treatment with Zestoretic
  • Doses can increase every 2 to 3 weeks as needed to gain blood pressure control
  • Adults should not take more than 50mg hydrochlorothiazide and 80mg lisinopril a day
  • Continue taking Zestoretic as prescribed even if you feel well
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

FAQ

What to avoid when taking Zestoretic?

Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment with Zestoretic because it causes your blood pressure to drop to dangerous levels and can increase adverse effects. During treatment you should also avoid driving or performing hazardous tasks until you know whether the medication impairs your reactions by making you dizzy or drowsy.

What time of day should I take Zestoretic?

Zestoretic can be taken at any time of day without significantly reducing the drug’s efficacy, but many healthcare providers recommend taking your daily dose in the morning. If the medication causes you to urinate more frequently, you should take your dose at least 4 hours before going to bed to prevent waking up to urinate.
