What is Biaxin used to treat?

Biaxin, with the generic name clarithromycin, is an oral antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate infections due to designated susceptible bacteria in acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, skin infections, acute otitis media, disseminated mycobacterial infections, and H. Pylori infections. Biaxin is only indicated for bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections.

This macrolide antimicrobial works by inhibiting the protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to subunit 50S of the bacterial ribosome. This binding hinders the peptidyl transferase activity and interferes with amino acid translocation during the protein synthesis and translation. This is available in Biaxin 500 mg and 250 mg tablets.

How to use Biaxin

Read the medicine information booklet that comes with this product first. Do not take this oral antibiotic if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and instructions in the guide provided. If you need further medical advice or have queries on this treatment, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take Biaxin orally. This is usually prescribed twice daily, with or without food or as directed by the physician. If you develop an upset stomach, you may have to take it with food. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, split, crush, or chew the oral medication to avoid releasing the drug all at once.

Remember to take Biaxin regularly. It is very important to make a dosing schedule with even intervals to achieve the best results. Your dose and length of treatment will depend on your medical condition, response to treatment, and for children, weight. Continue taking Biaxin until the full length of treatment is finished. This is to avoid the return of the infection.

Some disorders and diseases may impact how your system will respond to this drug. You must also tell your physician about all the prescription drugs and nonprescription drugs you are taking, for they might have drug interactions with this oral antibiotic.

Continually lookout for signs of an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this oral medication if you have a known allergy to clarithromycin, erythromycin, azithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, and any inactive ingredients this drug may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are skin rashes, swelling of the face and neck, hives, severe dizziness, and breathing trouble. If these occur, you must seek emergency help.

This drug may cause QT prolongation. Signs of it are fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, and fainting. To avoid this condition, stay hydrated and avoid taking diuretics or “water pills”. Note that conditions like low potassium and low magnesium levels could also increase the risk of QT prolongation.

Avoid receiving vaccinations or immunizations. This antimicrobial may cause live bacterial vaccines not to work effectively. Consult your doctor if the vaccine or immunization is extremely needed.
