Indications

Micardis HCT is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

Micardis HCT is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide.

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that helps to relax blood vessels, while hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that helps to reduce fluid buildup in the body.

Lowering high blood pressure can help prevent conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Use and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. It is best to avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to avoid having to get up to urinate. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your dosing schedule.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.

Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. It may take up to 4 weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug.

If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take this product at least 4 hours before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

In rare cases, Micardis HCT can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-colored urine.

Also, call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Eye pain or vision problems
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Swelling in your hands or feet or unusual weight gain
  • Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
  • Signs of an electrolyte imbalance–dry mouth, increased thirst, drowsiness, confusion, feeling restless, vomiting, muscle pain or weakness, lack of energy, fast heartbeats, little or no urine, or a seizure

Common side effects of Micardis HCT may include:

  • Dizziness or feeling tired
  • Nausea or diarrhea
  • Back pain
  • Cold or flu symptoms

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
